Inner West Council has given the green light to develop the Army Land.

Despite not being able to prove that it is safe for homes the IWC has buckled to pressure from Defence and approved the first stage of the development, the drainage in Deakin Av and O’Connor St.

Army Land entrances “H5 hazard” …” it is recommended that a shelter in place strategy be adopted for the development.”

In 1914 Haberfield Pty Ltd transferred the land to the Commonwealth, for 10 shillings.  Which is $60 today.

“…TO THE INTENT that the said piece of land shall be used for the purposes of a site for a drill hall and military recreation ground”

 

Richard Stanton, the architect of Haberfield, saw enthusiastic your men doing drills in the street to prepare for The Great War (World War 1).

To help our nation prepare these men, he gave the Army Land to the Commonwealth.

Many visitors to Haberfield may not know that the land exists.

The Army Land is 1.9 hectares (19,000 square meters, or 4.7 Acres).

It is between Hawthorn Parade, O’Connor Street and Tressider Avenue.
